Soapstone

A metamorphic rock composed essentially of talc with varying amounts of mineral impurities, including mica, chlorite, pyroxene, amphibole, serpentine, quartz, calcite and iron oxides. Colour varies from white to greenish grey and dark green as well as various shades of brown. It is soft (1-2 on the Mohs scale), but this may vary with type and amount of impurities.

Soapstone's use dates back to antiquity: early Egyptians carved it into scarabs and seals; in China and India it was used for ornaments and domestic utensils. It was similarly used at various times over the past 7500 years by Native Americans, Inuit and Norse in Canada.

We carry a wide variety of asbestos free Brazilian and Italian Soapstone in blocks ranging from 5 – 2000lbs. We also cut the stone into more manageable blocks upon request, but depending on the amount of cuts necessary we do charge a handling fee.
